Hiking in the Julian Alps in Slovenia takes you through emerald rivers, alpine meadows, and beneath dramatic limestone peaks. Trails pass crystal-clear lakes like Lake Bohinj and climb to wide viewpoints with sweeping views of rugged ridgelines and forested valleys. In Triglav National Park, the scenery shifts from quiet woodland paths to open mountain landscapes dotted with wildflowers and glacial rock. With its vivid colors, fresh alpine air, and striking contrasts of water, forest, and stone, the Julian Alps offer one of the most beautiful hiking settings in Europe.

Your adventure begins as you arrive in Slovenia, where transport will be arranged to collect you from Bled (short journey from Ljubljana Airport). It’s well connected to Europe, making your journey smooth and hassle-free. The meeting point, where we will start our journey to the mountains is in the town centre. The transfer will leave at 4pm and takes around 30 minutes. If you arrive before this time there are several luggage storage places so you can use the time to explore Lake Bled. If you’re arriving a day early, we can suggest excellent accommodation options to ensure a relaxed start to your journey.
For the duration of the trip, you’ll be based in Kranjska Gora, right in the heart of the Julian Apls. This means you won’t have to carry all your belongings from place to place, and after each day of hiking, you’ll return to the comfort of a warm shower and a cosy bed. Get ready for an unforgettable week exploring one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

This rewarding circuit links some of the most scenic viewpoints around the Vršič Pass in the Julian Alps. Starting at Tonkina Koča, the trail climbs through spruce forest and alpine meadows toward Slemenova Špica (1,911 m). From the grassy summit the panorama opens wide over the dramatic north face of Mount Jalovec and the jagged peaks of the Ponce ridge.
The route descends toward the Vršič Saddle, where the road crests Slovenia’s highest mountain pass, before continuing down past the small settlement of Vršič itself. A final stretch brings you to Erjavčeva Koča, a mountain hut perfectly placed for rest and refreshments.
The return completes the loop back to Tonkina Koča, making for a varied day that combines forests, ridges, alpine viewpoints, and one of the most celebrated vistas in the Julian Alps.

*** Alternative option for those who want an easier day
The hike begins alongside the clear waters of Lake Jasna near Kranjska Gora, climbing through forest on steep mountain paths. The first summit, Vitranc, offers wide views over the Sava Valley and the surrounding Julian Alps, with the limestone walls of Prisojnik and Razor towering above.
From here the trail continues along a rugged ridge to Ciprnik (1,745 m), where the panorama is even broader, stretching across the peaks of the Triglav National Park and down into the valleys of Gozd Martuljek and Planica.
The descent follows marked trails back toward Kranjska Gora, winding through forested slopes and alpine meadows before returning to Lake Jasna. With its combination of scenic lake, forest climbs, ridgeline summits, and sweeping alpine views, this is one of the most rewarding full-day circuits in the area.
If you would like to save your legs a little there are two options for shortening the hike. The first is when we arrive at the mountain hut, you are welcome to stay here while the rest continue to the final peak before returning for lunch. The second is to take the toboggan back down to the village, saving about 300m of descending right at the end.

Starting from Rudno Polje on the Pokljuka plateau, the trail climbs steadily through spruce forest and meadows before breaking onto open alpine slopes. The ascent to Viševnik (2,050 m) follows grassy ridges and rocky paths, with ever-expanding views of Triglav and the Julian Alps.
From the summit, instead of returning directly, the route continues across the ridge toward Srenjski Preval, adding variety and fresh perspectives over the Bohinj Valley and the Karawanks. The descent from the pass winds back through meadows and forest to Rudno Polje, completing a satisfying loop.

After several days of hiking through Slovenia’s wild landscapes, today is a chance to slow down, explore at your own pace, or take a day trip to one of the country’s other stunning destinations. One of the most popular options is to relax by the nearby alpine lake of Jasna and take a swim in the crystal clear water.
Another great option is the short trip to Lake Bled, one of the most iconic and picturesque destinations in Slovenia, known for its emerald-green waters, fairy-tale island, and dramatic mountain backdrop. Nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps, the lake offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor activities. Visitors can take a traditional pletna boat to the charming Bled Island, home to the historic Church of the Assumption, or explore Bled Castle, perched high on a cliff with stunning panoramic views. The surrounding area is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, or a leisurely walk along the scenic lakefront trail, while those looking for a taste of local tradition can indulge in Bled’s famous cream cake (kremna rezina) at a lakeside café.

Rising to 2,236 m, Stol is the highest mountain of the Karawanks and rewards with far-reaching views across Slovenia and Austria. The hike begins near Žirovnica and climbs steeply through forest before emerging onto alpine meadows with views toward Triglav and the Julian Alps.
The ascent continues on rocky switchbacks to the ridge, where the wide panorama opens across the Drava Valley in Austria on one side and the Sava Valley in Slovenia on the other. From the summit, the outlook stretches from the Julian Alps to the Kamnik-Savinja range and deep into Carinthia.

Starting from Vogel Ski Resort after taking the spectacular gondola to the top, the trail climbs steadily through alpine meadows and rocky terrain towards Vogel Peak, one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Julian Alps. As you gain height, sweeping views open across Lake Bohinj, the surrounding mountain ridges, and the heart of Triglav National Park. The route is challenging in places but never overly technical, making it a fantastic hike. Reaching the summit is a memorable experience, with panoramic views stretching across Slovenia’s highest peaks and deep valleys below.

After an incredible week exploring the wild beauty of the Julian Alps, it’s time to pack your bags and begin your journey onwards. Transport will be arranged to take you to Bled. It’s recommended not to book a flight before 3pm on the final day to give us time to get you back from the mountains.
If you’re extending your stay, there are plenty of incredible places to explore beyond the mountains. We’d be happy to share recommendations to help you make the most of your time.
As you leave Krasnjska Gora behind, you’ll take with you memories of dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and unforgettable adventures in one of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes. Until next time!

EXCELLENT Based on 79 reviews Posted on Google TH WWTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Well-designed and varied itinerary. We joined the first Sardinia tour with Garry, who accompanied the group throughout—clear attention to detail and strong collaboration with the local guide, Sergioooooooooooo. (Must pronounce his name in this way) The guide was knowledgeable and attentive, offering detailed insights during hikes while making sure everyone was comfortable. Accommodation was consistently good, and the traditional mountain shepherd dinner was a standout. I joined with a high school friend who flew across the Atlantic—worth it. The group bonded quickly despite different backgrounds. A strong choice if you want a hiking-focused trip with like-minded people.Posted on Google Chiao ChangTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Absolutely loved my first trip to Morocco through Trailmates Adventures. I’ve looked into other solo traveller group tours before but none ever ticked all the boxes until now. The entire trip felt like a hiking holiday with like minded friends - fun and interesting. Some friendships will last a long time, and some just shared moments. Great itinerary, well planned out, and adaptable depending on fitness levels. Communication was really good and straightforward, from both the organisers and the trustworthy local guides. Overall it was an incredible experience that exceeded expectations, and I am looking forward to booking my next trip. Our trip to Madeira was amazing. Trailmates Group organized a wonderful hike. This was our first group tour and our first hike ever, and now we'll definitely be going on more with this company. Firstly, the price was reasonable and the quality matched our expectations. Secondly, the tour was the perfect difficulty level and suitable for travelers of all fitness levels. The idea of traveling just for the hike was the most important thing for us, as we wanted to fully enjoy the hiking and nature. I'd also like to point out that Harry was always available, which gave us a sense of security. A huge thank you to our guide, Paolo – he's very friendly, has a clear itinerary, and does his job 100%. The other members of our group are wonderful, engaging people. We're so glad we met them, and they'll remain etched in our memories. Thank you, Trailmates, for Madeira, and we'll see you soon!Posted on Google Agnieszka JaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I liked the hikes in the Atlas Mountains and my fellow travellers in the group were great, too. I highly recommend it. :)Posted on Google Natasja HoexTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
